Thinkers September 20 2011: Social networks/ human rights

Voreian at Thinkers

Extropia DaSilva: Welcome to Thinkers!
[2011/09/20 15:33]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): thinking hurts
[2011/09/20 15:33]  Extropia DaSilva: Today the (seemingly unpopular) topic is….
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Extropia DaSilva: SOCIAL NETWORKS HUMAN RIGHTS: How inconvenient can not having an account with certain social networks and identity services become before adoption of such services cannot reasonably be called optional, even if nobody is actually forced to sign up? And should access to such sites be a basic human right?
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): just came from a meditation group where they told me to ‘stop thinking’
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Khannea Suntzu: Hey! … zobi what do you think of people who block? – are they shy, cowards, can’t handle the heat or just silly?….. zobi…… zobi…?
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Zobeid Zuma: Hi Violet!
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hi Zo, everyone 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Extropia DaSilva: hello:)
[2011/09/20 15:34]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): Yummy blocks Khanna*
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): what makes a social network sight a necessity?
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Zobeid Zuma: Extie. . . You might be surprised how many people today still don’t have — or want — *internet* access. :/
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i dont have a Facebook account
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): probably the only one here
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Extropia DaSilva: No!?
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Zobeid Zuma: Not everybody lives their lives online.
[2011/09/20 15:35]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): i do but only for the games .. i’m totally incognito on there
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): I don’t have a Facebook, either
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): I caved with MySpace, but that’s as far as I go.
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i dont have my photo in my high-school yearbook either in fact
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): refused
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Extropia DaSilva: Can you imagine a time when not being on FB is so incovenient you feel you really should be?
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): didnt want people later saying…’thats the person’
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): i cannot STAND people just thinking they can “poke” me and “friend” me and pretend like they even know who i am
[2011/09/20 15:36]  Conover’s Flight-Helper 6.3.3 (WEAR ME!): Flight-helper is ready and operational.
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Yeah, pretty easily….but the ubiquity of social networks makes new problems, too….
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): My facebook accaccount uses my avatr’s name
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): Yummy pokes kleo*
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): Ò·Ó
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): lol
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Zobeid Zuma: Not being on FB has been *no* inconvenience at all to me.
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): That’s funny, Kleo….something I hate about the way social networks have turned out is that it’s really hard to MEET people through them
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Khannea Suntzu: The problem with our current society is that we as a people, as individual citizens no longer unionize or form groups of socially conscious, responsible people. We do not defend against predation by solidarity. It is now everyone for themselves.
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hey Lem 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:37]  Extropia DaSilva: Well they cannot on FB Leo. You have to accept their friend reqiest. Now, on G+ I can add you to my contacts whether you like it or not.
[2011/09/20 15:38]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): that sux
[2011/09/20 15:38]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): can i opt out of that?
[2011/09/20 15:38]  Conover’s Flight-Helper 6.3.3 (WEAR ME!): Flight-helper is ready and operational.
[2011/09/20 15:38]  Extropia DaSilva: As it happens, not 2 seconds ago somebody added me to their contact list. I have no idea who this person is or why he or she should want anything to do with me,
[2011/09/20 15:38]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i think not having an SL account could hamper ones life-style 😛
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Khannea Suntzu: Yes yuimmy, a person adds you to *their* interest list and the recipient is notified and in turn can press ignore.
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Zobeid Zuma: That reminds me, I need to break out pen and paper and respond to a friend’s snail mail letter. Before the post office goes broke, I hope!
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Extropia DaSilva: Gwyn!
[2011/09/20 15:39]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): LOL Zob
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): the talk is no Saturday mail
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Khannea Suntzu: Hoi Gweyn
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: hi hi
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): there goes my exercise for the week
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Zobeid Zuma: Gwyn and Scarp, hii!
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Aw, I love writing letters 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:39]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hi Gwyn, Scarp 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): many schools are not teaching cursive anymore
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Gwyneth Llewelyn , fighting lag since 2004
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): budget cutbacks
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Zobeid Zuma: You know what’s sad is, they don’t teach touch-typing either. 😛
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Extropia DaSilva: Okies for my new arrivals the topic is….
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): hunt-and-peck
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Extropia DaSilva: SOCIAL NETWORKS HUMAN RIGHTS: How inconvenient can not having an account with certain social networks and identity services become before adoption of such services cannot reasonably be called optional, even if nobody is actually forced to sign up? And should access to such sites be a basic human right?
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): 2-finger typing is howmost type
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): glad i learned
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): My cursive is totally illegible, so I can’t complain about that :p
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Oh my, Extie
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Khannea Suntzu: I am disappointed by the utter lack of civic responsibility. People will suffer the consequences.
[2011/09/20 15:40]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: You should come to our meetings on Mondays hehe
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): like what?
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: http://virtualgovernance.tk/
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Extropia DaSilva: what time?
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, what meetings do you have on mondays?
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Gwyneth Llewelyn points at URL just posted
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Extropia DaSilva: OO is that Rhi? Hello!
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: 3 PM
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: and hi RHi!
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Scarp Godenot: Made it
[2011/09/20 15:41]  Extropia DaSilva: 3PM SLT?
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): And personally, I haven’re really used my FB account
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi Exte, Gwyn
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Extropia DaSilva: Hello:)
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Zobeid Zuma: Oh there’s Rhiannon. Hii!
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i dont get it
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: That’s it. It’s not every week though because of my ever-conflicting schedules. But the discussions are about human rights in the digital world, privacy, governance, and so forth
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi Zobeid
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, what discussions do you have andwhere?
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): speaking of digital rights
[2011/09/20 15:42]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): Gwyneth i hav ea question for you…
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): WHo wins when it comes to the 2 sides that say
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I hope to have an answer…
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): you can or cant copy IMs ?
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Yumyy, it is agains tthe TOS to cpy an IM
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): some say ‘screw LL TOS’ I do NOT give you the right
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Rhi: http://virtualgovernance.tk/
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): others say ‘screw what you say’ LL TOS rules
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): ok, so it’s not in SL?
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): but they are Instant Messages not Private Messages
[2011/09/20 15:43]  Scarp Godenot: So, to get started, Google is the biggest dog out there, Facebook is puny in comparison of company size. So Google’s name policy is a big deal. AND this is the beginning of requiring identity to be in one place.
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Of course it is, Rhi 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Yummy: that’s an ethical question really. Either you abide by ToDS and Community Rules, or not 😉
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: *ToS
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): It looks like a separate url
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): It’s polite to ask someone before you copypaste, but if it’s something said publically, then, well….
[2011/09/20 15:44]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Rhi: well yes and no. I hope to attract non-regular-Sl users as well
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): shouts: Rhi, scoot up! >:p
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Extropia DaSilva: No way would I share a private IM with anyone else.
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): ok, so it’s Monday at 2pm on that url
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: It’s a good question, Yummy 🙂 I’m afraid I have no answer really.
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i hear Rhia but see only what i think is Eve in the garden
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Oops you’re right Rhi — lol
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Violet, I’m trying; the lag is fierce; I was on Firestorm, on Phoenix I have a fighting chance
[2011/09/20 15:45]  Scarp Godenot: The more idenity is forced into one place the happier opressive governments will be. China alreay complimented Google+ on their name policy.
[2011/09/20 15:46]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Yummy: in your country, are you allowed to record a phone conversation without the other party giving you explicit permission or without a warrant?
[2011/09/20 15:46]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): yeah, I made it
[2011/09/20 15:46]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: The same applies to IMs I guess. Similar technology 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:46]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): Figure as soon as it leaves your computer it’s not private. And you can have different levels of privacy.
[2011/09/20 15:46]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: The same would apply to phones…
[2011/09/20 15:46]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): no wire tapping is a federal offense unlike UK where it seems to be legal
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Right! In my country it’s illegal as well.
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Extropia DaSilva: I do not know what to make of this policy though. My account is the most blatent ‘not a RL person’ there can possibly be but still my account is active. Been months now. Meanwhile, people are getting their accounts cancelled by Google just for having a name that could be psuedonymous.
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Well, under LL rules, you can’t, but you can’t monitor a regular internet conversation without a warrant, but they’e easy to get.
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): what is your country, Gwy ?
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Even taping a conversation in a public room without permission (to use it as ‘evidence’) is illegal
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Portugal 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Scarp Godenot: The Goal of Google AND facebook is to have a dossier on everyone containing all of their information and every word they have ever wriiten on the internet.
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Scarp Godenot: All in one place
[2011/09/20 15:47]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Indeed, Scarp.
[2011/09/20 15:47]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): yes scrap
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Scary, isn’t it?
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Well, the information that FB has is about my avatar; it would be very confusing to someone trying to figure me out.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: so many years fearing government, and now its corporations that play Big Brother — far more effectively than governments
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Zobeid Zuma: These days you can’t get out of bed in the morning without breaking some law or another.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Scarp Godenot: It is very frightening. and even more frightening that many people think this is an OK thing to do.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Zobeid Zuma: I just ignore them like most people do.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Also, imagine what Google can do with profiles + Android GPS geolocation….
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I agree, Scarp, that’s what frightens me most!
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Social networks can be cool, when you have control over your own privacy and the overall culture is….different. I liked Tribes.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Ⓚℓєσ™ (kleo.kondor): what would they do?
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Extropia DaSilva: But that is good, Scarp. One day my primary will not be functioning, and I will need as much information about who I am what I am like what I believe so advanced chat bots can take over the job of updating my social networks.
[2011/09/20 15:48]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: “If you’re honest, you have nothing to fear”.
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): and now comes Google wallet ..THAT may be a must-have thingy
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: It’s actually a quote from George Orwell 😛
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Scarp Godenot: Fighting the requirement of real names is a civic duty to start with.
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extie: so you’re only information? 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Extropia DaSilva: Yeah.
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): We’ll all only information, in a sense… 😛
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Hear hear Scarp 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:49]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): It’s almost too easy to create a false identity on the internet to get around the “real name” issue; they would have to have your SS #, which is illegal to ask for.
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Zobeid Zuma: Hah!
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Zobeid Zuma: Everybody asks for that. Nobody cares that it’s illegal (if it still is, even).
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): That’s an awesome link, Khannea.
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Zobeid Zuma: It’s not like there was every any enforcement or penalties.
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Mandatory reading.
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): was good link
[2011/09/20 15:50]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): It is still illegal, and well, no one’s asked me for that on the internet. Can get other people’s if needed.
[2011/09/20 15:51]  Extropia DaSilva: BUt if you expicitly say ‘this G+ account is of a fictional person not meant to represenrt anyone on RL’ how come Google does not ban you IMMEDIATELY?
[2011/09/20 15:51]  Scarp Godenot: A lot of stuff similar to the link Khannea posted can be found on Twitter at #nymwars
[2011/09/20 15:51]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extie: 10 employees, 30 million accounts? 😉
[2011/09/20 15:51]  Khannea Suntzu: Yah I work with Botgirl, sort of.
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Extropia DaSilva: I think that is wearing thin, Gwynie.
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: we need Botgirl to come over here 😀
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Extropia DaSilva: Is she online?
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Scarp Godenot: Is anyone here SL:friends with botgirl?
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Extropia DaSilva: Me
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): What’s botgirl?
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: What I mean, Extie, is that just because you *can* do something illegaly, it doesn’t mean thatnot being caught allows you to do it 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: lol Rhi!
[2011/09/20 15:52]  Khannea Suntzu: Its not much fictional. Bill is paid, case is filed, I will go to court. My legal first name will Khannea in a couple of months.
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Scarp Godenot: Botgirl Questi is the leading voice in SL on identity issues on the internet.
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Extropia DaSilva: Botgirlis the number one philopsopher of personal identoty in SL Rhi.
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Scarp Godenot: leading
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Zobeid Zuma: I didn’t know who that was either.
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Pretty much so.
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): oh, I see
[2011/09/20 15:53]  Khannea Suntzu: http://botgirl.blogspot.com/
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Scarp Godenot: It is funny I interact with botgirl daily on other media, but we have never met in SL….. haha
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Oh my. Thus we see how hard it is to get a grid-wide reputation in SL 😀
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Zobeid Zuma: I don’t spend my days reading blogs about SL.
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Khannea Suntzu: http://www.botgirl.com/
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Ah, good point, Scarp… I have met her in SL only once or twice 😀
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Extropia DaSilva: I met her a couple of times.
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Extropia DaSilva: Usually when she had an event going on.
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I remember when she was a newbie… very interesting person 😀
[2011/09/20 15:54]  Khannea Suntzu: I rarely blog about SL these days. Right now I am writing about Eugenics again.
[2011/09/20 15:55]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): wonder how many botgirl alts there are
[2011/09/20 15:55]  Extropia DaSilva: at least one.
[2011/09/20 15:55]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Nobody knows 🙂
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Anyway, Botgirl is definitely at teh forefront of the fight against the lack of privacy being slowly imposed upon us…
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: It’s a tough fight, because nobody believes in provacy any more
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: *privacy
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Scarp Godenot: She is a twitter manaic follow her at @botgirlq on twitter
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Gwyneth Llewelyn blames Internet dating
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): thats why we dont let Rhia wear clothes…down with her privacy
[2011/09/20 15:56]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: That’s what killed privacy.
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: haha Yummy
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): People actually find Facebook et al comforting, because it’s familiar; you know these people, they’re transparently the people you know.
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Can’t get on twitter; I didn’t use it for months, then went back, they had changed their format, wanted to import my friends onto it, wouldn’t let me, then they suspended my account
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Extropia DaSilva: Interesting fact. At the end of her first year’s diary she says ‘I feel like pinochio waking up to find he was Gepetto all along’. She then revealed her primary’s name. BUT Gepetto is just another character in the story NOT the author, so maybe that was just another layer of fiction in the Botgirl universe!
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Personally, I don’t see much point in that kind of internet, but yeah.
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: What kind of Internet?
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Scarp Godenot: suspended from twitter? I’ve never heard of that before!
[2011/09/20 15:57]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: wow rhi — you must be a first!
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): what reason did they give?
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Extropia DaSilva: uhuh!
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): The one in my comment above….a totally transparent, familiar network of people you already know
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): can they suspend your RL ?
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: it’s called “jail” — so, yes
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Scarp Godenot: The government can! haha
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Extropia DaSilva: yeah. Anesthesia.
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Ah Violet…. that would be a very boring place! also, small 😉
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): They can make you disappear, that’s suspending your RL
[2011/09/20 15:58]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): It’s called rendition.
[2011/09/20 15:59]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): You have to troll them pretty hard, though.
[2011/09/20 15:59]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): derender me …ugg
[2011/09/20 15:59]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): lol
[2011/09/20 15:59]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hi Voreian
[2011/09/20 15:59]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i want an RL alt
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Khannea Suntzu: There were protests at wall street. 50.000 people showed up. Twitter blocked most tweets about the protests. Motive, means and opportunity.
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Hi Voreian!
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Yummy — I have one! hehe
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi Voreian
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Voreian: hi
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Yummy, you can get one, but it’s really difficult, unless you just want a superficial change of identity
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Oh interesting, Khannea — I had no idea that twitter also did censoring.
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Extropia DaSilva: Ari quit hiding over there and come join us!
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: So, we get privacy loss AND censoring.
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: All from corps
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: And we still haven’t stopped them.
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): no i mean i want an extra character
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hi Ari 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:00]  Zobeid Zuma: Arisia, hey!
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Khannea Suntzu: Hey! … password
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Arisia Vita: Hi all!
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i could pay Rhia to do stuff and wear a tiny mic and camera
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): you could hire yourself out to be an alt
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Khneea, protests of what?
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): a new business venture
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Voreian: i thought the social networks branching out to infect all the other sites with its personal log in went too far
[2011/09/20 16:01]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): Real Alt
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Extropia DaSilva: we are not really here to discuss alts:) I had those discussions last year.
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Zobeid Zuma: I have to access YouTube with a different browser from everything else, or else it’ll keep trying to link my YouTube and Google accounts. 😦
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Khannea Suntzu: Funny thing is, if I were to travel wearing a cognitive aid, i.e. several invisible micro camera’s, for the purpose of remembering my life I can easily bge arrested and detained indefinitely. Terror laws. UK is pretty bad on this.
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Zobeid Zuma: That’s a nuisance.
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Some sites with Real Names policies apparently do sort of well….like, well, WELL I believe has a RN policy….
[2011/09/20 16:02]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): wb Gwyn
[2011/09/20 16:03]  Scarp Godenot: Google has stated that they want to link all of their products together with your rl identity.
[2011/09/20 16:03]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): soon certain sites will require fingerprint and iris identification
[2011/09/20 16:03]  Khannea Suntzu: So fuck any claims on privacy and transparancy, it’s pigs who are more equal.
[2011/09/20 16:04]  Voreian: well,.. sites are attempting to attach the person who logs in with the edress of the place they live so they can identify who exactly is doing something wrong,.. but they are doing it in such a way that is illegal because no one agreed to it
[2011/09/20 16:04]  Khannea Suntzu: The troubling question is why. My answer is because we face a perfect storm of potential societal collapse scenarios, and pretty nasty ones where many people could actually die. USSR style.
[2011/09/20 16:04]  Extropia DaSilva: oh dear poor Gwyn.
[2011/09/20 16:04]  Scarp Godenot: Any of us who appreciate internet freedom and the open source movement should make sure to comment on these issues regularly when they come up. It is only the action of masses that will help in the long run.
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Zobeid Zuma: Joining the EFF wouldn’t hurt either, by the way.
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Khannea Suntzu: Again scarp, I would really love to see unionization. Lobbying in actual organized blocks. ANON is a start.
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: hrrrmpf
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Gwyneth Llewelyn kicks SL
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Scarp Godenot: Yes Voreian, it is a good point to note that all of this is being done without permission.
[2011/09/20 16:05]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): ok so Extropia what disadvantages do you foresee for those who are not part of a social network?
[2011/09/20 16:06]  Extropia DaSilva: I had heard that by datamining one’s activity on the web, RL identity could be inferred pretty acurrately, anyway. With the resources at Google’s disposal I do not see why they need to ask me to tell them who my primary is. They have the technology to know, aparrently.
[2011/09/20 16:06]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Hah.
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Khannea Suntzu: Oh they know me, and I am not concerned actually Google ‘knowing’ me. They pay me, I work for them.
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i think they may be trying to ward off the next wave of super-hacking
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Well, unless you’re activity on the web is relative to your “character.”
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Scarp Godenot: I think that is generally true Extie, but these latest moves are to get EVERYONE, including the tech savvy
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: lol Khannea 🙂 Good point — through AdSense I also work for Google 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Extropia DaSilva: Well one example I heard of. If you are at college or Uni and you join a club you need to join FB because the club will have a page on FB where all updates like meeting times, upcoming events etc are posted.
[2011/09/20 16:07]  Zobeid Zuma: They have the technology to guesstimate anyhow. A lot of websites try to identify my home, but a lot of them miss it by about 35 miles or so. :/
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Yikes…close enough, Zo :\
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: It’s a good point, Extie. My worries is when governments start using Facebook to send notices to citizens.
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Khannea Suntzu: I dread the day I somehow have to inform Google oif my name change. How the fuck do I do that?
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Khannea Suntzu: A letter?
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Like they did in Australia a year ago
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): then i see a business for web-proxies where i pay someone to be an FB member
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): for me
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): The sites that I go to as Rhiannon never get my home right; not even close; ome thnk I’min Canada
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Extropia DaSilva: Why is my identity not identity enough?
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Voreian: i couldnt get a job because i don’t want a FB
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: well Rhi… do you own an Android smartphone? 😉
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): I belong to one strippers’s association based in Canada
[2011/09/20 16:08]  Scarp Godenot: Yummy, that it an interesting notion
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): Yummy crosses Canada off her list of places*
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Yes, the geolocation guesses I see are usually, like…wrong country :p
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: reallyh, Voreian?? that’s…. scary
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyneth, yes, I do, but I rarely use it for surfing the net.
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Extropia DaSilva: yeah.
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): What happened with that, Voreian?
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Hi Gadd
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): yeah, while I’m on it, they could track me; but I use it to get my email or come to SL
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi Gadd
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Well, then google is not yet indexing you. Because with an Android phone in your pocket, Google can know exactly where you are… 😉
[2011/09/20 16:09]  Voreian: the applications have face book id questions now
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: That’s very scary
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Oh, yes….but I just leave those blank :p
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Voreian: i do to
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Well, I won’t use the net, except for my email and SL then; no Google
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: What I always wondered was… how have they managed to avoid a HUGE scandal? I mean, there were scandals in SL years ago, while it was tiny
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Voreian: then they find if you have one with the email adress
[2011/09/20 16:10]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): drunks, indigents, homeless, the insane, the incarcerated, the unemployed…all viable candiates for social-networking-by-proxy
[2011/09/20 16:11]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I suppose scandals are really all hushed up…
[2011/09/20 16:11]  Khannea Suntzu: Interesting. Can’t we artificially envision how such a really raw nasty, herat wrenching schandal could emerge and then, with a little nudge here and there ‘engineer’ one. Cook up a nice ‘sobbing face’ for TV news?
[2011/09/20 16:12]  Voreian: facebook is stupid,… i only had one friend in highschool,… and it asked me if 200 people i didn’t like were my friends
[2011/09/20 16:12]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I like your mind, Khannea… 😉
[2011/09/20 16:12]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): The face has to be one people relate to. Everyone knows that people using pseudonyms are weirdos with things to hide :/
[2011/09/20 16:12]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Like Lady Gaga. Yeah.
[2011/09/20 16:12]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): they are currently able to create artifical people that animate…i dont mean digital i mean passable people so i see newscasters as a target 1st…
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Extropia DaSilva: Well I am certainly a weirdo…
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: compared to whom????
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Yummy, like in “Looker.”
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Khannea Suntzu: Everyone is basicly a semi-autistic, emotionally underdeveloped white trash dork.
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): nods
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): i resemble that remark
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: ㋡
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Khani, we’re all Tanya Harding?
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Scarp Godenot: Not one single person here is using their RL birth name. And we interact just fine. This RL name thing is only relevant to those with nefarious purposes.
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Extropia DaSilva: Do you think a time will come, perhaps soonish, when creating something like me will not be possible?
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Scarp, I agree
[2011/09/20 16:13]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: There you go, Scarp.
[2011/09/20 16:14]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extropia: definitely not on Facebook and Google+… for long
[2011/09/20 16:14]  Voreian: i find myself making fake identity to connect at that large scale level they want,.. so when they go to an address i lived at when i was 14,.. im not there
[2011/09/20 16:14]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): I think the frontiership of the internet is dying. And that’s sad, to me.
[2011/09/20 16:14]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): my parents named me yummy when they thought they’d have to eat me to survive when my mom gave birth while lost on a camping
[2011/09/20 16:14]  Khannea Suntzu: No, the ‘everyone’ that ” Everyone knows that people using pseudonyms are weirdos with things to hide :/”
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Violet: worse than sad — Facebook and Google (and possibly Twitter!) are creating a cyberpunk dystopia out of the Internet.
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Khannea Suntzu: Violet the new frontier is Ontonet. Heard of it? Wanna buy access tickes, got some here, 5 dollars. Small bits of paper, here taste them.
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Extropia DaSilva: But FB and Google ARE the Web, right? I have seen visual representations of the Web where Google and FB are MASSIVE planets with teeny insignificant little specks orbiting them, whisch is everyhing else.
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: And Governments are *on their side*.
[2011/09/20 16:15]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): So Khan we get 20,000 J. smiths? sudo’s serve a purpose also
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): haha
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): maybe a new social network where you have to be a real person but not yourself….
[2011/09/20 16:15]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: So perhaps I shouldn’t say “are creating a cyberpunk dystopia” but “have created a cyberpunk dystopia” 😛
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, the US goernment has been trying to carve out a privacy policy for years; it’ not atomatically on the side of the big Search engines.
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Yummy: Diaspora* 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi Sion!
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwynn, sounds like you’re tryig a ne recipe.
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hmmm, try some yummy diaspora
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Good with Miracle Whip or just plain
[2011/09/20 16:16]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Rhi: will they succeed? In Europe, there *is* a privacy policy, but FB/Google/etc. never cared about it.
[2011/09/20 16:17]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, well it’s an open question whether they will succeed; it’s almost impossible to really regulate the internet, even for good purposes–like protecting privacy
[2011/09/20 16:17]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Hmm.
[2011/09/20 16:17]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): there are only so many major internet nodes in the world
[2011/09/20 16:17]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Now that’s a good point: it’s impossible to regulate the Internet. So, what corps are doing is *taking it over* for their purposes.
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: See, cyberpunk dystopia 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): They have “common sense” on their side, though.
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Khannea Suntzu: I am on facebook and g+. So far, *weirrrrd* I have not been kicked off. And I do not use, barely add friends, don’t post and have disabled nearly all options. So in effect I take up fart space and do not support them. Here look at this special miniature rocket on the launch pad that is my fist (makes a special gesture at Facebook and Google)
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, only if we let them; I still think there will be workarounds for all of these things.
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Phedre Dassin: Phedre Dassin thuds
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Hi phedre!
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Extropia DaSilva: Heya Pheds!
[2011/09/20 16:18]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Perhaps that’s why cyberpunk as a cultural environment has died… we *are* living in the “near future” that Gibson, Sterling et al. have envisioned in the 1980s, after all
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Phedre Dassin: Phedre Dassin waves
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Then again, so did AOL for a little while. I expect Facebook to decline over the next few years, but the idea will probably always be around.
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Extropia DaSilva: Their future is finally evenly distributed, huh Gwyn?
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Khannea Suntzu: Slasher movies used to be fun goddamit. Now thy come wayyyy to close for comfort.
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Oh, Khannea, I have also a Google+ and a Facebook “alt” account with zero friends — and they haven’t been cancelled yet
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Khannea Suntzu: Dystopia is here, it isn’t evenly distributed yet.
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extie: depends on uyour definition of “evenly distributed” 😛
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Zobeid Zuma: Ironically, one reason I rejected cyberpunk back in the 1980s was because it seemed so laughably unrealistic.
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Voreian: remember the matrix,.. the folder that mr smith presented to neo with everything neo did his whole life,.. thats what the governments want on everyone,.. they want full power
[2011/09/20 16:19]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): well they say people are spending increasing amounts of time social-networking
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Khannea Suntzu: Hmm!
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Khannea Suntzu: How about we all do our part
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Violet: I like gthat optimistic thought, I’ll remember that.
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Zo: right!!!!!!
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Khannea Suntzu: and create all of us here 25 fairly credible facebook accounts with pics of hot chicks.
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Anyway….I’m getting super laggy, so I think it’s dinner time 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Violet (ataraxia.azemus): Take care, everyone
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Yummy: that’s what you’d *expect* them to tell 😉
[2011/09/20 16:20]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Have fun, Violet 😀
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: haha Khannea….
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Extropia DaSilva: bye violet
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Voreian: have a good one
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Khannea Suntzu: The server burn could power a small city alone 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): its belieable
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): believable*
[2011/09/20 16:21]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): tweet, email, FB, G+, SL, WoW, blog
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: SL? hehe
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): yes this is social-networking
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: SL is where the weirdos hang out 😉
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): they captured me alive
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Jayda Ferrentino: well now the SL profiles are up on the ent
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Jayda Ferrentino: net
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Khannea Suntzu: Magdale Crowdale. “I like snowboading”
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Good point, Jayda 😉
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Scarp Godenot: Facebook will decline only when something else similar comes along that works better. Google plus could have contended, but their name policy will make people just say…. meh
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Voreian: id be fucked if they connected all my info to sl,.. id never be able to log in again
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Jayda, yes, and unless you click ‘no one’ or ‘friends’ only, anyone can comment on them.
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Khannea Suntzu: Naome Crotan “I love my sister so much we hang out all the time”
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Voreian: i can’t even get google to match for youtube
[2011/09/20 16:22]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I’ve read that Google+ is declining, but now they’ve opened it to the public, I guess they will grow like crazy
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Jayda Ferrentino: right and i don’t remember getting an email about this change from SL
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): They opened it to the public? I wonder if they’ll let me on now.
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Phedre Dassin: Google + frightens me
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Khannea Suntzu: Pisses me off
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Not that I’m thrilled to be on them from what you all say about them.
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): I am waiting for Google-
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Extropia DaSilva: What is preventing Google from assigning me an identity like ‘z8rTT366s’? I mean, they say ‘give us your RL details and we will assign you a unique ID number so people know it is you, but you do not have to tell them your RL name etc. mThey just know it is a RL person because it comes with an identity tag? We shall assume for purpose that Google keeps its word about not divulging RL details:)
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Phedre Dassin: lol
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Khannea Suntzu: I briefly cancelled G+
[2011/09/20 16:23]  Scarp Godenot: I think they have offended a lot of the blogosphere that spreads things virally.
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Khannea Suntzu: They *chased* me, please come back. Subtle but persistent.
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Ah Extie, but that prevents people from using Google as a dating service….
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Rhiannon of the Birds feels devastated that G+ has not chased her nor let her on.
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Scarp, yes, but have you noticed? the mainstream media hasn’t picked up the story.
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Extropia DaSilva: Why? If people want to be fully open let them.
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Khannea Suntzu: Uhm I have a question
[2011/09/20 16:24]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): THX 1138 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/THX_1138
[2011/09/20 16:24]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extie: sure, but it should be an *option* — like iRL
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Khannea, that’s good, as I have a lot of answers I’m trying to get rid of.
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: hahahahaha
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Extropia DaSilva: FB is like that, Khannea. ‘OMG Extie log in to your FB account you are missing sooo much!’ I get emails like that:)
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Scarp Godenot: I have noticed that Gwyn, mainstream media has a vested interest in data mining
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Phedre Dassin: Those irritate me, Extie 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Khannea Suntzu: What if there were a regional country that declared by law that any organization that held and use information in a set of specific manners as do Google and Facebook were *illegal* and punishable wiuth fines?
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Extropia DaSilva: They appear if you do not log in for more than, like a day.
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Right — at least their owners have, Scarp
[2011/09/20 16:25]  Voreian: i refuse to go and do the new and shiney than everyone seems so intent on all the time,… the “look,.. its new and better everyone,.. move to this,.. its better “
[2011/09/20 16:26]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Khannea, it is so in my country, but who cares? If anyone won a suit on court, Facebook/Google would just drop their services out of my country…. and have everybody yelling
[2011/09/20 16:26]  Khannea Suntzu: It wasn’t emails. These linkages like with google docs and shit. Subtle stuff.
[2011/09/20 16:26]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Vore, that’s what keeps the economy moving, physical or digital, it’s the same thing.
[2011/09/20 16:26]  Extropia DaSilva: I joined G+ on the day they decided people like me were not supposed to join. Probably would not have bothered if I got the news sooner.
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: hehehehee Extie
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, yes, they can do what they want; they’re both an interne tpresence and an MNC; double whammy to those who would contro lthem.
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Khannea Suntzu: Whats illegal in Portugal, Gwyn?
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: well, I joined two days before that… and left a month afterwards
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Exie, lol
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Voreian: i still use XP as an OS because the new and improved never improved
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Khannea: using information like Google and Facebook do
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Scarp Godenot: A very successful social network would have something like Google+ circles, but the your circles would be different internet identities.
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: It doesn’t even require a lawsuit actually — it’s a *criminal offense*
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): You’re like me; I only go to thtothca because they have banned me; they’re boring. And I only want to be on G+ because so far they don’t let me.
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Khannea Suntzu: Precisely WHAT?? I am looking at tricks to leverage this. Something surgical?
[2011/09/20 16:27]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Scarp: I think you can do that on Diaspora, but I haven’t tried!
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Khannea Suntzu: Hey! … Gwyn…. portugal is a european country.
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: True, but who cares? lol
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Extropia DaSilva: I mean seriously. I activate my account thankls to Hanlet kindly inviting me in, and then I read (on Hamlet’s blog, probably) that I was not allowed to join. I figured, ‘oh well they will ban me in a day or so’. Well…been a few months now.
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Extie, please invite me. I want that experience.
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Khannea Suntzu: Take it to strassbourg, Domino effect. There has to be a way. You may be able to constantly keep sueing them, sending subpoenas in differen euro countries.
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Those systems work mostly by having people flagging accounts as “fake”
[2011/09/20 16:28]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: More 1984 to you.
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Scarp Godenot: I got on Google plus right off the bat, but then stopped using it entirely when the RL identity issue came up
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Khannea Suntzu: That predatory litigation happens in the US too
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: As said, it’s not a handful of employees that can screen through millions and millions of accounts manually….
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Extropia DaSilva: Then I hear you loose everything! Gmail, Gchat, probably the right to use their search engine…..
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Zobeid Zuma: I’d already been suckered into the whole Google Wave thing, so I wasn’t eager to jump on the next overly hyped venture.
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Khannea, I have no idea on how the Euro courts work. But around here nobody would have a chance against Facebook or Google.
[2011/09/20 16:29]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Extie, now how can they enforce that?
[2011/09/20 16:30]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Extie: right, that’s why I closed my account 😛
[2011/09/20 16:30]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: They *are* planning that
[2011/09/20 16:30]  Khannea Suntzu: People question to you all
[2011/09/20 16:30]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Zoe, what’s the Google Wave thing?
[2011/09/20 16:30]  Khannea Suntzu: why don’t people organize in mutually supportive unions??
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Khannea Suntzu: Call em sometjing else if it sounds to pink-o
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Extropia DaSilva: Aperrently they have a whole depart6ment that goes through your web history, deleting it so it is as if you never existed! It is called the Ministry of Truth. Oh wait….no that was a story I read once….
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Voreian: keep in mind,… the fact that we know they are taking the freedom out wont stop them,.. you have to stop using the things they police us with
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: We’re too individualistic, Khannea 🙂
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: And corps know that, they play upon our egos.
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Scarp Godenot: ha ha, Extie
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Khannea Suntzu: Fuck that Gwyn. That is apathy
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Khannea Suntzu: Cowardide
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Zobeid Zuma: It was a very confusing kind of im + shared notes service that everone was excited about for a short while, then they shut it down. 😛
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Jayda Ferrentino: even if you stop using FB it still has all your info saved
[2011/09/20 16:31]  ɖʊֆȶ աǟʟӄɛʀ (laborious.aftermath): Equilibrium
[2011/09/20 16:31]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Agreed, Khannea!
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: And very slow too, Zo.
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Gwyn, absolutely; that’s why they make it seem like it’s exclusive to join G+ Well, we don’t let just anyone in, Ms. Dragoone. I hear you go naked for a living. ::sniff::
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Scarp Godenot: My social network is Plurk. It is obscure, but not overarchingly controlling like some want to be.
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Extropia DaSilva: OK my time is almost up so last words people. How far are we from social networks like G+ or FB being so ubiquitous not joiniing is not optional?
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Plurk? If it’s obscure, hat’s the point of it?
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: 5 years or less, Extie
[2011/09/20 16:32]  Jayda Ferrentino: i think we;’re almost at that point
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Scarp Godenot: I think we are only 10 years from that Exite
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Extie, pretty far, as long as we keep our senses
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Voreian: only way to keep the popular things from connecting to you in reality is to stop using the popular things once they infringe on your rights,.. don’t give in to their shit!
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: I agree, yes
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Well Voreian, that works only if you have hundreds of millions doing the same.
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): We onlyneed social networks for our business, and then we can shield ourselves with the corporate shield.
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Zobeid Zuma: I say again. . . Large parts of the populace don’t even have internet access yet, and aren’t eager to get it.
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Trying to organise 10 people to protest is hard enough-
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Phedre Dassin: I agree, Voreian
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Scarp Godenot: The compulsory nature of those will start with workplaces requiring it for their employees,
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Zobeid Zuma: Because they have, you know. . . lives. 😛
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Khannea Suntzu: How would you all react if you’d know a Google ‘cool-hunter’ would be here in *this* crowd today, after this event was uhm Googled, to ‘feel the water’ and he will write ‘a somewhat mocking report about all the hahaha little sniveling peons tomorrow morning’ ?
[2011/09/20 16:33]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Gwyneth Llewelyn *nods* @ Scarp
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Yummy (lat.lovenkraft): yes its why group-sex beds dont sell well
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Extropia DaSilva: OK my time is up!
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): yeah, but then you can have a workplace identity and another identity
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Rhiannon of the Birds (rhiannon.dragoone): Yummy, lol
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Gwyneth Llewelyn: Should be fun, Khannea :=)
[2011/09/20 16:34]  Extropia DaSilva: NEXT WEEK DIZZY’S PLAN…..

    Comments worth consideration (sans attribution):

“my facebook accaccount uses my avatr’s name”
“that reminds me, I need to break out pen and paper and respond to a friend’s snail mail letter. Before the post office goes broke, I hope!”
“many schools are not teaching cursive anymore”
“what’s sad is, they don’t teach touch-typing either.”
“I am disappointed by the utter lack of civic responsibility. People will suffer the consequences.”
“the Goal of Google AND facebook is to have a dossier on everyone containing all of their information and every word they have ever wriiten on the internet.”
“so many years fearing government, and now its corporations that play Big Brother — far more effectively than governments”
“If you’re honest, you have nothing to fear……..It’s actually a quote from George Orwell”
    “We’ll all only information, in a sense…”

My initial impulse was to comment on each comment (“there are circles in our circles” – sketch on Carol Burnett Show with Madeline Kahn )……..however, after selecting the comments upon which to comment, I realized that the collected comments are my commentary.

The one exception is the George Orwell quote, to which I site the following (source Wikipedia, verification My life experience)…..

Bowers v. Hardwick, 478 U.S. 186 (1986), is a United States Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of a Georgia sodomy law criminalizing oral and anal sex in private between consenting adults when applied to homosexuals.

Before 1986 if I had been honest about myself, I would have been violating the law…..Law is important, as are civil conventions…..but because something is a Law is not proof that it is just, or even optimal.

    Arch

  2. Arch says:

Oops, I should have said in 1986, I still would have been in violation of a law accepted as constitutional by the US Supreme Court.
